SF IT Linux
Monthly Linux Meetup (Flatpak and Snappy, GNU Octave)
Tuesday, February 18th, 2020: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
NSU - Davie

Carl DeSantis Bldg, Room 1124, Knight Auditorium, Ground Floor.

Long time FLUX member Kwan Lowe will be making two presentations:

The first is on Flatpak and Snappy, which are two ways of packaging an application, and all the files it depends on, into a single file, such that the application has everything it needs to run, but cannot access the surrounding operating system's file system. This protects the surrounding operating system in case something with the application goes wrong. Think "virtual machine light" or "container heavy".

The second is an overview of GNU Octave which is software featuring a high-level programming language, primarily intended for numerical computations. Octave helps in solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments, and is a standard, along with the commercial MATLAB program, in engineering and the sciences.

About FLUX: A meetup group for IT Professionals who use Free and Open Source Software, Linux, UNIX or UNIX-like Operating systems including Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu (and other Linux distros), MacOS, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Android/Chrome.

The Artificial Intelligence Revolution In Medicine - Oge Marques
Wednesday, March 18th, 2020: 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Abdo New River Room at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced a revival in recent years, thanks to advancements in software and hardware and the emergence of a set of techniques collectively known as deep learning, which have enabled better-than human performance in many challenging tasks, including visual object recognition and speech understanding.

One of the richest fields for AI applications is healthcare, where hundreds of companies, from startups to technology behemoths, are working on AI-powered solutions to multiple problems, such as: drug discovery, in-patient care and hospital management, patient data and risk analytics, lifestyle management and monitoring (using wearable devices), mental health, nutrition, and medical imaging and diagnostics.

This lecture will provide an introduction to fundamental aspects of the current state of AI in medicine to a non technical audience. Adopting a balanced approach, Dr. Marques will present a large number of examples of applications of AI in medicine that will broaden your view of the field and allow a better understanding of its foundations, risks, applications, and implications.

Tickets are about $35.
